Support the Training of Human Trafficking & Exploitation Caregivers

What is the Problem?

When the issue of human trafficking comes up, many people think that it only happens in places other than the U.S. The fact is that human trafficking is right in our backyard. The U.S. has become a primary destination for victims, and it is also where many of the consumers of human trafficking reside. Many are trafficked to the U.S. from other countries; however, many are trafficked right here within our borders. Trafficking affects all people groups. It occurs with adults and children in rural, suburban, or urban communities across the country. Runaway children, homeless youth, immigrants, and those who have experienced violence and trauma are especially vulnerable.

That said, the crisis is much broader than human trafficking. Even with our technological and social advancements in the 21st century, we live in a nation and world rampant with abuse, exploitation and victimization in general. Whether it’s psychological, physical, spiritual, socio-economic, or sexual abuse, it particularly targets the most vulnerable—women, children and the poor and often results in family breakdown, homelessness and displacement, trauma, stress and a variety of other societal ills. How is God calling us to respond to those within our communities dealing with these personal crises? He is calling us to pray and act. When we pray for and with others, God not only brings healing and restoration, he often empowers us to further intervene on their behalf. When prayer and action meets a crisis, history proves that it results in a life, a community, and even a nation transformed.

What is the PRAY & ACT PROJECT?

Marion Skeete of LegacyMakers and Jennie Fournier of Greater Boston Prayer and Action Network are teaming up through the PRAY & ACT PROJECT to offer a series of online workshops that train short-term and long-term caregivers of those who have survived abuse and/or exploitation in the art of transformative prayer and crisis intervention.

Marion is a minister, professional life coach and certified mediator who has worked within the human services field, serving women, children and families in shelters, victimized by poverty, trauma and domestic abuse. She has also worked internationally serving street children and HIV/AIDS orphans in Africa.

Jennie has done missionary work since 2007 both in domestic and international settings, mostly working with the disenfranchised, especially those who have been abused or exploited. As an Awareness Coach, she shares knowledge about human trafficking and exploitation to mobilize people to pray and act. Her own story as an abuse survivor inspires many and is felt in the passion she brings to her work.

Together with other life coaches, missionaries, ministers and human services professionals, they will offer workshops to believers who have a heart for prayer and a love for people—particularly women, children and the poor—that have been the victims of abuse and exploitation.

What are the Trainings Being Offered?

The online trainings kick off this November, 2016 and continues to the end of Winter 2017. The topics that will be offered are: “The Art of Transformative Prayer,” “The Basics of Human Trafficking & Exploitation,” “Supporting Others through Change and Transition,” “What Does the Bible Say about Human Trafficking and What Has God Called Us to Do,” “Resolving Conflicts at Times of Crisis,” “How to Pray to End Human Trafficking,” “Helping Survivors Cope with Grief & Loss,” and “The ABC’s of Working with Abused & Exploited Children.”

Who or What Do the Funds Raised for These Trainings Benefit?

The funds will benefit the ongoing work of LegacyMakers International Ministries and Greater Boston Prayer & Action Network. A percentage of the funds will also be allocated to a missions trip that will be hosted by these two partner organizations planned for Fall 2017 to the Red Light District of Mumbai, India—to minister to the victims of human trafficking.

Why Mumbai?

Mumbai is the fourth largest city in the world. It is a major industrial hub in one of the world’s fastest developing BRIC economies (Brazil, Russia, India, China). It has become a magnet for migrants seeking better economic opportunities from across the country, who provide a steady stream of labor for sex buyers.

Kamathipura, Mumbai’s red-light district, happens to be the largest red-light district in the world. There are over 100,000 sex workers based in Mumbai alone. Ninety-five percent of the children of prostituted women become prostitutes. In fact, many of the children that are victims of human trafficking are under five years old! HIV is being spread like wild fire. Although prostitution is illegal in India, laws are not being enforced, and there is little justice. No doubt, there has been much work done, however, there is so much more to be done in strengthening the justice system.

Child labor also continues to be a major problem. Partly due to the AIDS epidemic, there are more unwanted and orphaned children in India than any other place in the world—over 50,000 orphans. Many of these children are on the streets of Mumbai and are being exploited. It is estimated that one in every 11 children in India is working.

We trust that you will open your hearts wide and help us train those who will serve as caregivers to victims and survivors of abuse and exploitation, both domestically and internationally. Your generous and heartfelt donations will also support through transformative prayer and crisis intervention the victims of human trafficking in Mumbai, India, as well as the ongoing ministries of LegacyMakers International and Greater Boston Prayer & Action Network. Thank you in advance and may God richly bless you!
